The SUP Team Challenge series kicks off with an event at the beautiful Lake Hood, just outside Ashburton, an hour south of Christchurch. This amazing location, with a maze of canals and sheltered water ways, is going to make for the most incredible and fun racing, especially as our base station for the event will be the fabulous Lake Hood waterfront restaurant. This is going to be a SUP event unlike any other!

Better still, this event has been very kindly sponsored by Christchurch land surveying and land development firm, Fox and Associates who have been involved with the Lake Hood project from the start. Their kind sponsorship has allowed the entry fee to be reduced to just $100 per team - $25 per person for two full days of competition with all gear provided. Which has to be the bargain of the century!!

All participants and spectators please note that no dogs are allowed in the Lake Hood area

Schedule

We have detailed a few of the events but not all, as we want you coming prepared for anything! Teams can expect to be confronted with a wide variety of challenges, all of which will involve their paddleboard, and each member of the team will be the 'team champion' for at least one of the events... Beyond that, we're saying no more!

The Location

This amazing location may well qualify as the most amazing venue ever for a fun stand up paddleboarding event! Lake Hood was designed to provide an aquatic recreational resource for the people of mid-Canterbury. After 14 years in planning and development, the park was officially opened in 2011, becoming a key asset for the people of the region.

All participants and spectators please note that no dogs are allowed in the Lake Hood area

Today, the combined recreational and residential development provides an incredible range of amenities established around the unique aquatic playground. And that's exactly what it is - the maze of canals and waterways is just going to make for the most fabulous, fun and safe setting for the very first ever SUP Team challenge!

The base for the challenge will be the superb Lake House Restaurant, right at the water's edge. Food and drinks will be served all day, including breakfast on Sunday morning if there is sufficient demand. And the terrace area overlooking the water (see below) will be the perfect viewpoint for watching the fun!

The Event Board

All boards will be supplied!!! (Other than for the full-on open class SUP race at the end, if there are enough people wanting this). The world's best selling inflatable board brand Red Paddle Co, along with their NZ distributor Paddleboarding NZ is very kindly sponsoring these events with a fleet of Voyager 13'2s, the perfect board for this challenge. Fast, yet stable and easy to paddle, and with enough volume to float several riders, it's a super versatile platform that you're just going to love riding.

There will also be paddles available but you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer.

Getting There

Lake Hood is just a few km from the main SH1 highway from Christchurch to Timaru. Coming from Christchurch, turn left about 1800m after crossing the main river bridge in Ashburton, onto Grahams Road, and just follow that till you get to the lake. Follow signs around to the Lake House Restuarant.

Local Accommodation

There are a few bed and breakfast operators in the Lake Hood estate. However, just 4km away in Ashburton town there is a wide range of accommodation available.

Hotels and Motels

Campsites and Holiday Parks

Other Attractions

Lake Hood is great for a wide range of watersports. Almost two and a half kilometres in length and over a kilometre wide, the lake has separate spaced for an eight-lane international rowing course, dedicated water skiing and jet skiing areas, as well as ample room for swimming, sailing and kayaking, and stronger wind sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing. The lake also has extensive picnic areas, recreational reserves, and trails for mountain biking and horse trekking.

There are also plenty of other activities on offer in the Ashburton area.

And here are a few more on Tripadvisor...
